Candida Test
Candida test and candida overgrowth test often present challenges to patients and health practitioners in getting an accurate candida diagnosis. Many of the candida tests that are commonly available are not always enough to identify the candida overgrowth or its severity. One of the reasons for this is that it is normal to find candida in the body. People’s tolerance and response to the candida overgrowth may be completely different in terms of symptoms and the way they feel.
For this reason, healthcare professionals usually rely on multiple factors to test for candida overgrowth and yeast infection issues. (source). These candida tests include:
- Existing candida and yeast infection symptoms.
- Medical history of the patient.
- Physical examination.
- Laboratory tests such as candida stool test, saliva test (not the spit test!), blood test, urine test, candida antibodies test, skin test, vaginal discharge test, and others.
The existence of multiple candida overgrowth and yeast infection symptoms along with risks factors are usually good indications to start the treatment for candida overgrowth.

Candida Lab Tests
Lab tests for candida are considered more reliable tests for candida overgrowth and usually involve collecting samples from the affected areas such as skin, nails, mouth, vagina, as well as blood, urine, saliva or stool. The samples are further analyzed in the lab. Lab tests can be very useful if their results are positive as they may also reveal additional factors about the infection and your health; these details may be very helpful in order to tailor the right treatment for you. It is important to remember however, that negative lab results or low levels of candida don’t always mean you do not have candida overgrowth. In our practice we have seen many cases of conflicts between different lab tests done on the same patient at the same time: some tests came as negative while other as positive.
Common Problems with Candida Test Results
Missing Symptoms during Candida Test
Many systemic candida symptoms are very similar to other medical conditions. As a result, there are a lot of misses that can prevent identifying the root cause of the infection. Furthermore, candida symptoms can appear anywhere in the body: from digestion issues such as constipation, diarrhea, or bloating, to oral thrush, chronic fatigue, headache, brain fog, pain, fever, skin, nails fungal infections, jock itch, vaginal yeast infections, itching, burning and many others.
To make sure you are not missing any signs or symptoms you may have, see our yeast infections symptoms checker that covers the complete list of candida overgrowth symptoms broken down by each area of the body.
Negative Lab Test Results
Candida and yeast infection test results sometimes come as negative even when the patient actually has candida overgrowth. A common example is the candida antibodies test that checks the immune system response to candida. The idea behind the candida antibodies test is that the immune system fights candida and yeast infections by producing more candida antibodies, therefore high levels of candida antibodies may be present in cases of candida overgrowth.
The problem with this approach is that it depends on a person’s immune system function, so lower levels of candida antibodies do not always mean you do not have candida overgrowth.
