Prevent & Treat Yeast Die Off

Many die off symptoms can be prevented with proper attention. What may start as a minor issue can turn into a big healing crisis nightmare if left untreated. Sometimes you will need to stop the treatment. In other cases, reducing the intensity of the treatment may be enough.

A common misconception about candida die off is that it is a sign that the treatment is working. What a strong die off reaction means, is that the amount of toxins released by the dying candida is more than what your body can safely handle. The high level of toxins can put a lot of stress on internal organs, especially the colon, liver and kidneys that are involved in filtering toxins in the body.

This is especially important for these cases when you try to self treat at home. Safety should always come first.

When To Stop The Treatment

If you have any of the following symptoms of candida die off, you may want to talk to your doctor, and decide whether to stop or reduce the intensity of your treatment. We highly recommend to do this in advance, so you are prepared. When you go over the candida treatment plan with your doctor, cover what you should do in case of these symptoms. This is very important and can help to prevent many unnecessary candida die off symptoms.

  • Share your previous experience.
Old symptoms may come back during the cleanse. We get many emails from people that had to deal with painful symptoms they didn’t expect all by themselves over the weekend, since their doctor wasn’t available.
  • When it comes to candida die off, everyone is different!
People’s tolerance and response before and during the treatment may be completely different. Some people are much more sensitive than others. This is completely normal and should be considered during the treatment.

1. You Feel Really Bad

Common symptoms: flu like symptoms, fever, chills, dizziness, swollen glands, headaches, joint, muscle pain and aches, fatigue. Respiratory issues such as sore throat, sinus infection and increased mucus production.

If you already experience severe candida die off symptoms, here are a few things you can try.

Flush toxins out to remove the candida toxins quicker from your body should be your first priority.
If  you have done colon hydrotherapy or water enemas in the past and found them useful, they may help provide a quick relief.
Other natural options for you to consider: overnight toxin flush.

In addition:

  1. Antifungals: Reduce or stop the usage of any antifungal supplements or foods, including probiotics.
  2. Stay hydrate: Make sure you drink enough water.
  3. Take showers (head to toe) may provide relief as well. The skin is the largest organ in the body and plays an important role in detoxification and toxins elimination.

2. Anxiety

Our approach to anxiety, depression and mood swings during the candida cleanse is simple. If you feel that any of these symptoms may compromise your quality of life or daily activities in any way, go see your doctor. Do not wait. Especially if you have a history of anxiety or depression.

Feeling a little down during the candida cleanse is one thing. Having to deal with anxiety or panic attacks however, is a different story.

3. Brain Fog

Brain fog and poor mental clarity are common die off symptoms. They are not unique to the candida treatment, so you may experience them in other body cleanses as well. Brain fog during a candida cleanse is not always a die off. Many people also experience the reduction in mental clarity when they switch to a low carb diet too quickly.

So you have a candida die off brain fog, mental confusion or poor cognitive function. Should you stop the treatment? Ask yourself:

  • Can I still do my job?
Many people need to be sharp due to their profession. In some cases, brain fog at work can be even dangerous. (If you drive, operate machines, etc).
  • Does it affect my personal life?
The people around you may not always be aware of how uncomfortable these symptoms can be. If possible, we always recommend to share this information and what you are planning to do with your close friends or family. So they know what to expect.

Bottom line: it is normal to expect some reduction in brain performance for the first few days. Anything above that, or if you experience a severe low cognitive function, go and see your doctor, stop or reduce the treatment intensity.

Skin: Rash, Itching, Acne

Candida rash and yeast infection on skin are common issues of candida overgrowth. You may notice that some of these symptoms become worse during the cleanse. So you may see rash, eczema, itchy skin, acne and other symptoms on the skin.

Common treatment issues: yeast infection creams don’t always work. The reason is simple. When you have yeast infection on skin, your skin is already irritated. When you apply yeast infection cream on the infection, even a natural one, you may experience more irritation. This also applies to vaginal yeast infection, yeast infection in mouth (oral thrush), and other areas in the body.

Recommended yeast infection creams: For this reason, we always advise to pay extra attention when trying new creams for yeast infection. Even natural ones. Safety comes first. Digestive Issues

Digestive issues such as bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, nausea after eating, acid reflux, heartburn are common symptoms of candida overgrowth. They are also common when you have gut health issues, or if you eat a diet that is not right for your body.

If you had digestive issues before you start the candida cleanse, you may notice worsening symptoms during the cleanse. The diet is usually the key. If you are not sure which foods may cause you digestive issues, work with your health provider to eliminate the foods or supplements you suspect that may be the cause.

This is so important, that we wrote an entire experts guide on this topic to help you in the process. We get many emails from people everyday that were able to cure their digestive issues after many years. Sensitivity to certain foods, foods that are hard to digest, problematic food combination and other factors were the cause. Diarrhea or Constipation

Diarrhea or constipation are common candida die off symptoms. These should be taken seriously. The actions you may need to take in each case however, may be different.

  •  Diarrhea: if you have diarrhea or very loose bowel movements for more than a few days, or if you have a severe diarrhea, you may want to see your doctor. The risk is dehydration and loss of essential electrolytes. These can cause serious health issues.
  • Constipation: constipation can cause the toxins released during the cleanse to circulate longer in your body. So you get a healing crises and feel sick. This can lead to many other die off symptoms. Treatment options in case of constipation should focus on the diet, and not on laxatives. You can use the overnight toxin flush as a natural alternative that may provide a safe quick relief.

Candida Die Off Stool

Candida in stool, yeast in stool and more specifically: seeing dead candida in stool makes many people alarmed. It may get graphic. It is not pretty. This is the point where you finally see it. The candida yeast coming out of you.

Passing dead candida in stool during the candida treatment however, is very common. When candida starts to die during the treatment, it is being eliminated throughout normal bowel movements. You may also see dead parasites in stool as well. Learn More.

Other symptoms that are related, may include increased mucus in stool. These are common during a cleanse.

Candida Die Off Urine

Symptoms: frequent urination, foamy urine bubbles in urine, smelly urine, pain during urination, unusual urine color.

If you notice any of these symptoms or other urine related issues during the candida treatment, a few things you should know. These symptoms may or may not be related to candida. You do not want to ignore these symptoms as well, as there may be an underlying issue. Make sure you drink enough water. If these symptoms cause you any discomfort, or do not become better in a few days, you should go and see your doctor.

We get a lot of questions on the UTI and candida connection. Infection of the urinary tract (UTI) due to Candida albicans is not very common, although possible 1.  If you suspect your UTI or bladder infections may be related to candida issues, you should get checked by your doctor. The diagnosis and treatment you may need in each case can be different 2.

Antifungals & Candida Supplements

Antifungals and candida supplements contain ingredients that can kill candida and yeast in your body. While this can be very beneficial in some cases, it can also backfire. One of the biggest problem we see with many of the candida supplements is that they contain harsh ingredients that are just too aggressive for many people.

An important note on the kill candida topic:

Many people use antifungal supplements in order to artificially “kill the yeast”. What you really want however, is to restore the natural balance in your body, so your body can safely eliminate the excess yeast naturally. These are two completely different things.

The “Kill the yeast” approach usually ends with strong yeast die off symptoms and much less benefits.

Natural antifungals: Pay close attention to natural antifungal herbs, spices, and plant extracts. Many of these can cause a die off reaction. Common examples include garlic extract, caprylic acid (derived from coconut oil), oregano oil, grapefruit seed extract, colloidal silver, diatomaceous earth, olive leaf extract, tea tree oil and other essential oils.

Certain probiotics such as saccharomyces boulardii may also cause candida die off symptoms.

Candida Die Off From Foods

Many foods that are recommended for the candida diet have naturally occurring anti fungal components in them. For this reason, always start with very small serving size, and see how you feel.

Coconut oil is a great example. It is one of the most popular foods known to kill candida. We use it many of our candida recipes. If you have candida overgrowth, and are not used to coconut oil, you may get a die off reaction from only 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of coconut oil. Candida die off symptoms from coconut oil are very common, so you always want to start with 1 teaspoon (5 ml).

Other common examples of foods that may cause candida die off or a detox reaction:  apple cider vinegar, garlic, turmeric and large amounts of lemon juice or baking soda.

Vaginal Yeast Infection & Discharge

Vaginal yeast infection discharge is one of the most common signs of yeast infections in women. The classic signs usually include a thick chunky milky white discharge that looks like cottage cheese, with intense itching, irritation, swelling and burning around the vulva. You may also feel pain during sexual intercourse or during urination.

The candida treatment may aggravate these symptoms, or cause abnormal or excessive discharge. It is very important to avoid using risky remedies, harsh creams or douching. In many cases these can cause more harm than good. Especially when your skin or vagina are already irritated.
