Boric acid for yeast infection

Using boric acid for yeast infection as boric acid suppositories has been a controversial remedy for vaginal infections and yeast infection treatment. The big concern with boric acid has always been the potential side effects and toxicity of boric acid. Boric acid is classified as a dangerous poison that can cause serious even fatal health risks (1).

Furthermore, using boric acid for yeast infection doesn’t address the root cause of the infection, as in most cases of vaginal yeast infections, the root cause is in the gut and not in the vagina. The root cause may vary from one person to another, and as such as the needed yeast infection treatment can be completely different. This is a very common problem where only the yeast infection symptoms are treated. As a result, the yeast infection symptoms keep coming back and in many cases become worse as the untreated yeast overgrowth continues to spread and evolve.

This experts guide summarizes the latest information on using boric acid for yeast infections. We looked into published medical studies as well as the thousands of boric acid suppositories reviews we gathered over our many years of practice.

Main Topic covered In this guide

Boric acid suppositories

Using boric acid suppositories for yeast infections is based on boric acid antifungal and antimicrobial properties. In lab setting, boric acid was shown to interfere with the development of candida biofilm and hyphal transformation (2). Human studies suggested that using boric acid for yeast infections in women was effective for cases of recurrent vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis) by a non-albicans candida species or candida strains that are resistant to standard antifungal medicine such as azole (3).

What are the side effects of boric acid?

Boric acid suppositories side effects

Boric acid suppositories side effects may include vaginal burning and itching, watery discharge, redness in the vagina (erythema). In some cases the partner reported a gritty sensation with intercourse during the treatment period (4).

The biggest concern with boric acid is when it gets into the bloodstream. Boric acid is classified as a dangerous chemical poison that can cause serious even fatal health risks (1). Boric acid is very toxic when taken internally or in other scenarios where it can enter the bloodstream even when used intavignally.

This is very important. When you use boric acid suppositories, if you have open wounds, cuts, abrasions or in cases of vaginal bleeding, it may enter the bloodstream. When this happens, boric acid side effects and risks may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dermatitis, organ damage especially kidney damage.

Some research data suggests that boric acid may lead to reproductive and fertility problems (5). For this reason, boric acid should not be taken during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in case you are planning to become pregnant.

Summary and recommendations

Based on our many years of practice, working with thousands of different cases of vaginal yeast infections, we believe that using boric acid for yeast infection is very risky, unsafe, and can cause many serious side effects. This aligns with many published medical reviews who also concluded that boric acid should not be considered as first-line treatment for vaginal yeast infections due to candida albicans as more safe, effective, and shorter duration treatment are available (4).

Furthermore, using boric acid for yeast infection doesn’t treat the root cause of the infections.  This is one of the main reasons why so many women experience recurrent yeast infections after they stopped to use boric acid. A  similar observation was suggested in one study that found that boric acid effectiveness for vaginal infection ends with the suspension of using boric acid for yeast infection (8).

Vaginal yeast infection relief

A much safer all natural option to boric acid suppositories and capsules based on our experience that is also backed up by published human studies is ozonated olive oil, which was shown to be both safe and effective for vaginal yeast infections (6).

boric acid suppositoriesOzonated olive oil is olive oil that had ozone added into it. Unlike many antifungal creams that can cause more irritation and burning when used topically for candida and yeast infections, Ozonated olive oil has a unique ability to reduce candida and yeast growth (9) on one hand, while helping to soothe skin irritation and accelerate wound healing at the same time (10).

This unique ability that was demonstrated in many human studies makes Ozonated olive oil a preferred natural ingredient in many home remedies for candida and yeast infections including yeast infection on skin, oral thrush, vaginal yeast infections and male yeast infections.

When using ozonated olive oil for vaginal yeast infections, you can use the oil to make a vaginal yeast infection cream or as homemade suppositories.

See the Ozonated olive oil tampon home remedy for a step by step instructions.

Candida yeast overgrowth

When you have a candida yeast overgrowth problem in your body, there are usually multiple yeast infection symptoms in different parts of the body: external signs causing infections of the skin, nails, toenails, feet, mouth, tongue and genitals, as well as internal symptoms causing digestive issues, mood swings, brain fog, muscle and joint pain and breathing or sinus infections.

How to find the root cause of your infections

Certain medication, antibiotics, high sugar diet and chronic stress are common causes of yeast infections and candida overgrowth. This is very important: as long as the cause of your candida overgrowth is still present you won’t be able to cure your infections.

Using boric acid suppositories and boric acid capsules

If you consider using boric acid for yeast infection, our recommendation would be to always consult with your health provider before.
Boric acid is available over the counter without a prescription as boric acid suppositories, boric acid powder, and boric acid capsules.

If you plan to use boric acid capsules, the studies done on boric acid for yeast infection used 600 mg boric acid in an intravaginal gelatin capsule (7).

How do you insert boric acid suppositories?

To use boric acid suppositories for yeast infection, you can buy an already made boric acid suppositories product or make your own boric acid capsules.

  1. Wash the vagina with warm water (no douching).
  2. Dry well.
  3. Wash your hands with water and soap before applying the cream.
  4. To make the boric acid capsules: insert 600 mg boric acid into an empty capsule.
  5. Insert the boric acid capsule or boric acid suppository into your vagina. It is best to choose a time that you can lay or sit comfortably, ideally at night.
  6. Start with a 1-2 hours.
  7. If irritation occurs, take out the capsule or suppository immediately. Wipe the vagina with a clean paper towel and wash with warm water.
  8. If no irritation occurs, take out the boric acid suppository or capsule.
  9. Wait for 24 hours. If no irritation occurs, continue with this protocol for up to 7 days.

How long does it take for boric acid suppositories to work?

One study suggested that the time it takes for boric acid suppositories to work may be 7 to 10 days. Other cases can take longer than that. It is important to remember that boric acid was only tested short term (up to 14 days). For this reason, and considering boric acid known toxicity, if you consider using boric acid suppositories or boric acid capsules, never use boric acid for longer than 7 days. Always consult with your health provider before.
